Prior to your first session: Prior to our first session together, you will need to read and complete the following:

You will also need to read and sign my Notice of Privacy Policy.

Our First Session: In the first session, I will ask you a number of questions about the problems you are experiencing, your personal and family history, your goals for psychotherapy, your expectations and your hopes for the future. The initial session will last approximately 60 - 75 minutes. By the end of the first or second appointment I will also discuss possible treatment options that might be helpful for you and make specific recommendations.

Following Sessions: Most appointments last 50 minutes and have many of the following components: (1) a “check-in” which might involve the use of a mood graph or client narrative to look at mood shifts over the past week, (2) setting the agenda- developing a plan for the session in terms of the most important topics; (3) review of the homework- reviewing any homework assigned in the past session with a special emphasis on problem-solving if there were any problems completing homework or barriers, (4) Working through problems on the agenda, and (5) summarizing the session and assigning homework. Not all sessions are this structured and sessions may vary a good deal in content. The goal is to make efficient use of therapy time by carefully structuring the therapy session in order to be most productive. We will regularly 'check-in' with each other about the therapeutic alliance as well as the journey.

When is Therapy Over? Therapy comes to a natural end when your therapy goals have been met. If you feel that you are not making progress, please discuss this with me. If you feel that we can not work together, for whatever reason, please discuss this also with me. If a referral is needed, one will be provided. Allow at least one session for terminating so that we can process the experience as well as process any unresolved feelings, review relapse prevention (if necessary), and facilitate discharge.
