The central nervous system (CNS) comprises:
The brain.
The spinal cord.
The spinal cord is a thin rope
of neurons and axons going from the hindbrain down inside the vertebral
column. It has a central core of grey matter, mainly neuron soma, and
an outer layer of white matter, mainly myelinated axons. There are 31
pairs of spinal nerves going in and out of the spinal cord.
The CNS has overall control of body
and behavior. What you see, hear, eat, drink, think, and do ... either
arouses (excites) or depresses (inhibits) your CNS. It is important
to understand that in all emotional issues, you have to treat of your
CNS gently. To see why, let's take a closer look at how your CNS serves
you:
Your Rest & Digest Needs (Human Being)
The parasympathetic system conserves energy as
it slows the heart rate, increases intestinal and gland activity,
and relaxes sphincter muscles in the gastrointestinal tract.

Your Response Needs (Human Doing)
The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for priming
the body for action. One example of this priming is in the moments
before waking, in which sympathetic outflow spontaneously increases
in preparation for action. Another example is the 'fight-or-flight'
response.
